Sony Ericsson W8 [android phone]

Sony Ericsson has revealed the W8 Walkman Android handset in a low-key announcement. The phone has appeared in the product section on Sony Ericsson’s with no attached press release. From what we can tell the handset appears to rebadged Xperia X8 with Walkman branding, although it does come with a MH 410 stereo headset.

It comes with the same four-corner shortcut UI as the Xperia X10 mini and X8 smartphones and has quick and easy to access playlists. Like the Xperia X8, the W8 comes with a 3-inch display and features a 3.2MP camera and 3.5mm headphone jack. Also, like the X8 the handset only comes with Android 2.1 Éclair (rather than v2.3.2 Gingerbread seen on recently released handsets).

The phone will be available in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam from Q2 2011 in three different colours (Azur, Metallic Red and the iconic Walkman Orange).

Ericsson: Commercial LTE Networks to See Continued Growth

Of the estimated 5 billion people who will have mobile broadband by 2016, about 95% will be served by HSPA, CDMA and LTE networks

More than 50% of all Android and iOS smartphones are connected to the internet viaEricsson infrastructure

Ericsson has signed LTE contracts with six of seven of the top ranked operators by global revenue 2010.
Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) highlighted the expected growth of commercial LTE networks globally and in the region, the company also demonstrated the benefits of its LTE portfolio as part of presentations at LTE MENA 2011 in Dubai.

In today's all communicating world broadband Internet is becoming an asset as vital to global development as steam, electricity or oil was for previous generations of technology, and access to internet 24/7 has become a necessity for life. Ericsson estimates that 50 percent of iOS and Android smartphones are connecting to the internet via Ericssontechnology.

The explosive use of smartphones has emphasized the need for network technology to reduce latency and improve efficiencies. LTE,(Long Term Evolution), is the fourth generation of mobile network technology, which is set to revolutionize the use of mobile data services. The technology has been gaining support from mobile operators around the world in recent years and will be able to offer benefits from its global economy of scale, according to Ericsson.

Ulf Ewaldsson, Head of Radio Networks, Ericsson AB and Melih Tufan, Head of Product Line Packet Networks, Ericsson, both held presentations emphasizing the increasing support of LTE as operators recognize the benefits of migrating to the technology.

LTE is the fastest developing system in the history of mobile communication. 150 million people today have access to LTE networks, which is remarkable growth since its initial launch at the end of 2009. Ericsson has supplied the large majority of these commercial LTE networks and has signed contracts with six of seven of the top ranked operators by global revenue 2010.

"The introduction of LTE will be an evolutionary step, rather than revolutionary. We estimated 5 billion people who will have mobile broadband by 2016 and about 95% will be served by HSPA, CDMA and LTE networks. Also, large parts of existing infrastructure are re-used providing a future-proof technology path for flexible migration of services between 2G, 3G and 4G mobile technologies," said Ewaldsson. "Even though 3G will continue to do a perfectly good job in delivering broadband to billions of mobile users for many years to come, LTE will be essential to meet customer expectations and demand for speed and capacity enabling more applications such as interactive TV, mobile video blogging, advanced games and professional services"

There were more than ten commercial LTE deployments 2010 and at least 64 LTE networks are anticipated to be in commercial service by end 2012. In total, 128 operators have publicly committed to the technology across 52 different countries with a large number of LTE trials currently in operation.

The report confirms 140 firm operator commitments to deploy commercial LTE systems in 56 countries. The number of committed operators is 118% higher than one year ago. A further 56 pre-commitment trials have been identified. Taken together, the report confirms 196 operators in 75 countries are currently investing in LTE. The report covers both LTE FDD and LTE TDD modes. www.gsacom.com

Tufan said: "LTE's primary objective is to enable operators to transport the increasing volume of mobile IP data traffic on their networks more efficiently and more cost effectively. Meanwhile, service revenues paid by end users are either flat or falling due to strong competition.

This disconnect between income and costs is threatening to weaken the positive revenue-generating potential of mobile data services for operators. That is why operators have recognized that LTE offers them a long-term path to financial security," concluded Tufan.

Xperia Play, Neo and Arc Rooted

Three new devices join the vast armada of devices that developers have given us root access for; the Xperia Play, the Xperia Neo and the Xperia Arc. All manufactured by the good people at Sony Ericsson.

Pocket Now is reporting that the devices have been rooted but for those unfamiliar with the process, this isn’t one of those ‘one click roots’ that we’ve come to love. Here are the details, from Pocket Now.

You’re going to need your bootloader unlock code for the process, which you can now retrieve for qualifying phones using Sony Ericsson’s website tool (you’ll need a phone that’s not SIM-locked to a carrier, and be willing to relinquish warranty coverage as a result of your tinkering). Once you’ve got the bootloader open, you can re-flash your Xperia with one of the specially-prepared images, tailored for various localizations. A quick reboot later, and you’ve got your root access.

Downloads are available now supporting the Xperia Play and several Xperia Arc releases, with the needed Xperia Neo files promised for release tomorrow.

If you’re interested in rooting your Play, Neo or Arc, you can find more info at the source links below.

Sony Ericsson's net profit drops by 48% in Q1

English.news.cn 2011-04-19 19:41:39

STOCKHOLM, April 19 (Xinhua) -- Mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson said Tuesday that its net profit in the first quarter this year was 11 million euros (15.7 million U.S. dollars), down 48 percent over the same period last year.

Its sales dropped from 1.4 billion euros (2.0 billion dollars) in the first three months of 2010 to 1.1 billion euros (1.6 billion dollars) this year, a 19 percent decrease, it said in a statement.

"The Japan earthquake made it a challenging quarter operationally and we are experiencing some disruptions to our supply chain," Sony Ericsson's President and CEO Bert Nordberg said in the statement.

As a result, units shipped during the quarter were 8.1 million, a 23-percent decrease year-on-year, due to a decline in the number of feature phones shipped, introduction of new products toward the end of the quarter and seasonality, the statement said.

But average selling price for the quarter was 5 percent higher than the same period last year as a result of product and geographical mix.

The company introduced Android-based smartphone Xperia arc and Xperia PLAY models.

Sony Ericsson estimated that its market share for smartphones during the quarter was about 5 percent in units and about 3 percent in value.

Sony Ericsson forecasts a modest growth in total units in the global handset market for 2011.

Smart Play or just another phone?

Sony Ericsson Play is world’s first Playstation-certified phone.
Sony Ericsson Play is unique. The world's first Playstation-certified phone, it pairs a mobile gaming console with an Android smartphone. It is a treacherous territory Play is expected to navigate. In the past, several phones tried to flaunt their gaming credentials — Nokia N-Gage comes to mind — but failed to impress hardcore gamers as well as phone users looking for some occasional fun on the move.

Sony Ericsson, of course, believes that with Play, which is equipped with a gamepad, it can break into untrodden ground. We take out Play for a spin to see how worthy it is of the faith that Sony Ericsson (SE) puts in it.

Play as a phone
In the world of slim and slick high-end phones, Play stands out. But not necessarily for good reasons. Because it incorporates dedicated gamepad in the bottom half that slides out, Play is thicker — 16mm — and heavier — 175grams — than all high-end Android phones. Given the fact that it's a phone with half of Playstation built in it, there was little SE could have done as far as the design is concerned.

The same cannot be said about the build quality. Here, SE has to take the rap. Play is constructed out of glossy plastic, complete with plastic buttons that have been given chrome finish. While it feels sturdy and is comfortable to hold and use, the overall build quality doesn't do justice to the stature of the phone. A little less plastic could have been better.

Similarly, buttons could have been fitted a bit more snugly and use of rugged rubber might have given it a more compact look.

Timescape, SE's own user interface, running atop Android 2.3, aka Gingerbread, is elegant on Play. It is not as bold as HTC Sense but is neither as understated as Samsung Touchwiz. Functionally, Play's hardware – 1Ghz processor, 512MB RAM and Adreno 205 GPU – does a good work to make sure that Timescape UI is fluid and its animations, which have exceptional flourish, work as they are meant.

Play functions well enough as a phone. Call quality is clear and decent. Keyboard is not the best available on an Android phone but we have seen worse. Messaging UI offered by Timescape is minimalistic and functional. And so are the mail and contact apps. Browsing is generally fast. When it comes to scrolling and pinch-to-zoom, Play is no speed demon but it's functional.

As a multimedia device, Play is a mixed bag. In terms of audio playback, it's up there among the best. The sound is clear and detailed and the two speakers are decently loud. But in video playback, the phone falls short. If you are someone who doesn't like to convert videos before uploading them on devices, you won't like Play's temperamental nature, which it exhibits with different codecs.

Location-based services are a very important part of Android experience and a good GPS performance is vital for any smartphone. On SE Play, GPS is accurate and locks without much fuss. We drove around a lot with Play and its GPS never gave us any reason to complain.

Battery life is average for a smartphone. After full charge, the phone lasts for around eight to nine hours on 3G with moderate use and a little bit of gaming.

Two deal-breakers
This doesn't mean that Play is without its faults for there are two glaring problems with it. One is the screen. Play ships with its 4-inch screen set to maximum brightness. The reason is that once you go lower than that, it is almost unusable.

Colours are decent and so are viewing angles, but a below average brightness ruins the whole experience. The second big flaw is a mediocre camera. Play comes equipped with a 5 megapixel camera. The quality of still photographs is average. The real problem, however, lies in videos. Nowadays, 720p video capture is a standard fare on high-end Android phones. But Play supports videos recording only at 800 x 480 resolution.

Play as a gaming device
Gamepad is Play's real appeal and SE has made all efforts to make sure that gaming experience is flawless. Overall, the company succeeds. When you slide out the gamepad, the phone automatically opens the game hub from where users can access their installed games. In India, Play ships with just one game, Tetris. Crash Bandicoot, Fifa 10, Sims 3, Star Battalion and Bruce Lee are installed but users will have to download game data before they can play them.

Gaming experience on Play is nice as far as you do not try it outdoors where the screen with its low brightness is a problem. People familiar with gamepad control will feel at home with Play. Other users will take some time to get used to buttons but when they are comfortable, they will appreciate the kind of difference physical buttons can make for anything that is not an Angry Birds or Fruit Ninja.

A note on 3G trouble
When play reached TOI test lab, it cooled its heels for a few days. Reason: it refused to play nice with Vodaphone 3G connection. The same connection worked fine with Samsung Galaxy S.

Even as we were trying to figure out what is wrong, we came to know about a user having problem with SE Arc, another high-end phone launched by SE along with Play. We went back to SE. The company promised to look into the matter.

SE later admitted to the problem and had it fixed on the evening of April 14, seven days after the phones were launched in Delhi. But the fact remains that if the company would have been a little careful before launching Play and Arc, it might have saved a lot of heartburn to users.

Worth the money?
Play is more or less what SE wanted it to be. Build quality could have been a little better. It also falls short in multimedia performance. But other than that, the phone works as specified. The question, however, is — does it deserve your money?

The answer depends on how crazy you are about mobile gaming. If you pack PSP whenever you step out, Play makes some sense. But for the average users, there is little merit in the phone. Play is more of a gaming device than a phone. Users, who primarily want a smartphone will do well by staying away from Play.

SE play has been launched in India at an MRP of Rs 35,000. The street price is expected to be around Rs 30,000.
